Thinking of a move to the area - reasons to come to Marlborough

Date Published 26 April 2022

We are very lucky to be able to live and work in this wonderful area, but for those thinking of a move here that might not be familiar with Marlborough itself there are some well known and not so well known features of Marlborough that may influence your home search so we set out some here;

Well known features of Marlborough;
1. The wide High Street - filled with a range of independent and national shops - its the image that is most well known and many peoples first thoughts of the town.
2. The town lies within the Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the countryside around the town is quite glorious whatever the weather and whether on foot/bike or car/horse! Add to this the ancient and historic landscape of Savernake Forest, Silbury Hill and Avebury and we are spoilt for opportunities to explore.
3. Excellent communication routes - the town lies on the A4 travelling East/West and on the A346 North South, linking up with the M4 and A303. Access to the railway network is also available at Pewsey, Great Bedwyn and Swindon to name a few local stations so commuter access is relatively easy.
4. Highly regarded schools. Marlborough College, St Johns Academy and numerous excellent primary schools in many of the villages add to the draw to the area.

Less well known features (in no particular order);
1. Priory Gardens, Marlborough - a quiet spot for a picnic just off the High Street.
2. Parking; At first sight, some may think that there are few car parks in Marlborough, but in addition to the High Street and George Lane, The Parade, Hilliers Yard and Hyde Lane all offer further parking, with free on street parking also available in several locations.
3. The Parade Cinema - mentioned already in our news section - a real gem in the town, and a place for a coffee/cake too, or try Krumbz just down the road for a seat by the river.
4. The River Kennet running through the town - glimpses of the river can be seen throughout the town, but the Stonebridge Nature reserve and Coopers Meadow provide wildlife havens.
5. The alleyways and lanes off the High Street. There are many ancient lanes leading off the High Street, many of them give access to some fascinating houses which are therefore within a stones throw of the local shops - Ironmonger Lane, Alma Place, Figgins Lane and Angel Yard are a few to explore. There are plenty of other footpaths in the town too - many of which give a quiet traffic free route into town.
6. St Peters Church - there are churches at either end of the High Street. At the western end St Peters offers a great view over the town if the tower is open.
7. Marlborough Castle and the White Horse- both in the grounds of the college - find them if you can.

Houses within walking distance of the town centre are especially sought after and will often attract a significant premium from buyers from far afield in addition to local buyers who are already in the know.

We hope the above is of assistance and interest - this brief list if by no means exhaustive - if you have any gems of Marlborough to add, then please do let us know.
